Intro to Screenwriting is a one-semester course designed for high school students ready to turn creative ideas into a professionally structured screenplay. Offered in partnership with Filmmaker’s Edge, this self-paced course features engaging video lessons, practical exercises, and guided support, equipping students with the tools to complete a short or feature-length script.
Through weekly lessons and assignments, students will explore:
- Story Structure & Concept Development Learn essential frameworks like the three-act structure and Hero’s Journey.
- Character Building & Arcs Create believable characters with compelling motivations and growth.
- Dialogue & Visual Writing Discover how to “show, not tell” with cinematic dialogue and visual storytelling.
- Conflict, Climax & Emotion Bring your script to life with tension, stakes, and emotional depth.
- Revisions & Sharing Your Work Refine your script and explore options for festivals or further development.
Students submit weekly time logs and work samples through Family Academy Online to document learning and receive credit. The course is monitored by Teacher Consultant John Elliott. Content is owned by Hollywood filmmaker Damon Evans and is offered with permission for Family Academy students. Any physical course materials, if required, will be shipped directly by the course creator.
